Redwood, West Virginia has always been known for it’s place in the equine business; the small town is famous for all the horseman and horsewoman that derive from it. And in more recent years the town has been growing more and more widely popular and more and more people have been coming to set up their own place in the small town. Even those who aren’t into the whole equine world love this town because of its small time living and everyone knows everyone way of living; Redwood is one of the most peaceful places you could ever live at and is an absolute haven for those who’s life revolves around equines.
The town was founded in 1823; Schuyler Stables was started shortly after the town was founded by the very wealthy Schuyler family. Although wealthy, the Schuyler ’s were kind people, and there was no one that loved horses more than they did. They owned over 1000 acres to the northern end of town where they ran their business. They had a very large family and had built a mansion on their property. In 1850 the family began taking in apprentices that would study the Schuyler ’s way of training, breeding, and showing their horses to go out and hopefully start an equine business of their own. In 1961 the last living descendant of Schuyler Stables died; and in his will he had left the entire property to the citizens of Redwood to open the mansion as a boarding school that centered around horses offered equine education and classes to it’s students; and public boarding to anyone in Redwood. The school opened as the Schuyler Boarding School in 1965. By 2010 the school had built onto the mansion to open room for more students and the grounds held everything you could think of for horses; round pens, indoor rings, outdoor rings, breeding barns, a practice track for race horses, multiple trails, cross country courses and four large 100 stall stables. Anyone 14-19 years old are invited to join the school. There is no boarding fee for students their horses may stay there all expense paid; while public boarding for non-students is available it is $200 per horse a month.
Other than the Schuyler Boarding School Redwood has a wonderful elementary and daycare for the younger children of Redwood and plenty of jobs available for older citizens. All in all, Redwood is efficiently a wonderful place to live peacefully and raise a family.
Things in Redwood isn’t always peaceful though; there is a very large equine competition between the citizens, riders, and stable owners of Redwood. And with any competition there is always the drama that comes along with it; can you handle the pressure?
